Now featured in the prestigious Glasgow Art Club, this is our bronze of Peter Coats, who continued his father's work. Sir Peter had already given to Paisley Art Institute the main gallery and the sculpture court. Now, his son Peter, as our Honorary Vice President, fulfilled his father's wishes by doubling the gallery provision for the PAI exhibitions. PAI had purchased the land for the project and saved for 30 years, to provide 4 further galleries.
The president at the time was John Millar, and did the organising work, choosing the architect and overseeing the design and progress.Towards the completion, Peter was ill and decided to finance the building himself by leaving funds to PAI. He was dead at the 1915 handover, as his beloved Institute gifted the new galleries to Paisley Burgh.
PAI commissioned this bronze from Alexander Proudfoot 1916 - In grateful memory.
