Nancy Henderson

I originally studied drawing and painting at Edinburgh College of Art. After a little bit of moving about and following various paths in life I settled in Glasgow; that was twenty-six years ago. Drawing has been a constant in my life and even when using paint and brush I still describe my pictures as drawings, often mixing media; soft pastel, ink, gouache, pencil, always working on paper. My art often focusses around the human figure, but I also enjoy drawing Glasgow’s strong buildings and green spaces. In recent years I have been sharing my work on social media and this has injected an immediacy and sense of fun into my work that has led me on to drawing cartoons alongside my ‘fine art’. I draw every day, even if it’s just a doodle. The drawing Girl with Red Hair and Green Eyes came out of trying out a new box of gouache paints, initially just enjoying the flow and squiggle of the Cadmium Orange on the paper. The initial brush marks suggested lively hair and a face naturally followed, a drawing that came out of chance and play.
