I graduated from Grays School of Art, Aberdeen with BA (Hons) in Drawing & Painting in 1993. I paint in mixed media and work with a balance of spontaneity and careful editing, enjoying the accidental and experimental aspects that occur, intuitively allowing the painting process to suggest the direction of the work. My aim is to evoke a sense of mood, moment or even meditative aspect to obtain a sense of calm when viewed. Through layering and washes I build until the desired effect is achieved, often scouring, scratching and washing back to reveal previous layers and colours underneath. My inspiration comes from both urban and rural landscapes, including everyday images that are often overlooked, such as cracked pavements, old weathered walls, doors with peeling paint and sand, stone and rusted metal.
