Allan J Robertson is a landscape painter based in Edinburgh, Scotland.

His paintings explore the relationship between industry and the natural environment, in particular, industry in decline. His work begins when an image of a site, structure, or material – a modern ruin – catches his attention. This is followed by extensive research on the subject pulling in drawings, photographs, historical documents, and site visits.

The paintings are completed in the studio, using a bold and heightened palette to create atmosphere and layering paint to add depth in key sections. Manipulating light and dark, he contrasts vast, intense skies and disquieting backdrops with detailed structural elements.

The resulting images are rich in texture and colour and evoke a strong sense of place.
