Stephen Smith - Artist Member

Stephen is a contemporary Scottish landscape painter, he paints in oils, acrylic, watercolour and mixed media. Stephen is a graduate of Glasgow School of Art and has continued to produce his own work whilst also spending most of his career teaching. Stephen has exhibited work through a number of duo and group exhibitions including RSW, PAI, RGI, Society of Scottish Artists and Aberdeen Artist Society’s annual exhibitions. He has a number of paintings in many of Scotland’s independent galleries around the country and private collections in London and the USA.

“I aim to create atmosphere in my work through colour, mark making, texture and composition. I am always trying to use paint in different ways and I always have several pieces on the go at any one time, experimenting with media and the visual elements is always important to me. Paintings are finished when they communicate something that is beyond the obvious.”
“The physical act of painting and mark making begins consciously but the painting is never predictable.” Stephen finds he can get lost in the process of painting and his work will often alter and change as a result of what the landscape gives him during this process.
