James Davis was born in Glasgow in 1944. He studied at the Glasgow School of Art between 1963 and 1967, specialising in drawing and painting under William Armour and David Donaldson. His work is mostly landscape, figurative and portraiture, working in both watercolour and oils. He has over the last thirty five years been a regular exhibitor at the following venues: The Royal Scottish Academy; The Royal Glasgow Institute of Fine Arts; The Royal Scottish Watercolour Society and the Paisley Art Institute.

Davis has a formidable following of collectors, with works in many private and public collections, including: The Royal collection purchased by HRH The Duke of Edinburgh, Holyrood palace; The Faizal Royal family collection; Vatican Commission, Scotts college, Rome; Strathclyde University; Helen Cargill Thomson Bequest; Strathclyde education authority; Renfrewshire council; Argyll & Clyde health board; Glasgow City chambers; Kilpatrick house; Merk finance.

Awards include: David Cargill Award, R.G.I., 2003; Reid Kerr painting prize, P.A.I., 2004, and in 2003 he was nominated and elected to the R.S.W. in 2003 and Elected Diploma Artist PAI in 2010.
