As with many women artists of my era in the sixties, family came first for many years, although I never stopped painting. We lived in Ullapool, Wester Ross, with the glorious colours of the land and sea.
We swapped Ullapool for Qatar in the Arabian Gulf (I still painted Wester Ross). In Qatar, I exhibited paintings, taught briefly, worked on Doha radio, and worked as an artistic advisor on Qatar TV.
About 20 years ago I met my old teacher and great friend James D. Robertson RSA. He took me under his wing and told me to “Get bloody painting.”
Because of Jimmy, I succeeded in having work accepted by:
Royal Glasgow Institute Annual Exhibition
Royal Scottish Water Colourists Exhibition
Paisley Art Institute Annual Exhibition
Glasgow Art Club Deutsche Bank Exhibition
Artist Member of The Glasgow Art Club
Winner of ‘The House for an Art Lover’ award at the Paisley Art Institute Exhibition in 2016
Winner of ‘The Glasgow Gallery’ award at the Paisley Art Institute Exhibition in 2018
My Exhibition at the ‘House for An Art Lover’ ‘Going Solo at Sixty-Nine’ ran for several months in the Spring of 2017 and was very successful.
I am please to say that both commissioned and gallery paintings are hanging in places as far flung as Canada, USA and Australia. When I say far flung, I can add, that one of my larger commissions survived a hurricane on the British Virgin Islands a few years ago. The owner retrieved it, intact, and none the worse for having been blown across the beach, whilst his yacht lay a mile away in bits. Art is always is always a good investment!
If I have to say something about what inspires me, I can’t. I don’t know what’s going to go on the blank canvas until that first brushstroke of colour. Or maybe it’s J.D. Robertson standing behind me telling me to “Get bloody painting!
