About
Rebecca Styles grew up in Yorkshire, where she attended Bradford College of Art before embarking on a Fine Art Degree at Falmouth College of Art in Cornwall. The wild Atlantic coastline of her childhood holidays on the Isle Arran, along with her memories of the rugged and unspoilt North Yorkshire moors, paved the way to her love of the untamed landscape. She spent several years working from her remote home studio in the Western Isles of Scotland before returning to the mainland to further her projects inspired by the British Isles.
Her work is exhibited in galleries across the UK, and held in private collections in America, Australia and Europe. She is the recipient of a Vacma award and Creative Scotland Artist Bursary for her work involving local raw pigments and traditional paint making. She is currently artist in residence at Thorp Perrow Arboretum, North Yorkshire.
Artist statement
My practice could be described as a series of painted love letters, as exchanges between my emotional state and my inspirational surroundings, where nature survives and sustains itself in order to renew, where nothing is wasted, just re-invented. The delicate balance between nature’s vulnerability and strength inspires my work. My engagement with paint is born of an emotional response to an experience, a memory, a place or a time. I express this on canvas by placing the viewer within the wildness of the natural landscape.
