Elspeth Bennie - Artist Member
Elspeth Bennie is an understated artist & blacksmith who exudes talent. Her studio is located within the rural Stirlingshire village of Balfron, a short drive north of Glasgow. With a degree in sculpture from Glasgow School of Art, Elspeth Bennie complements artistic metalworking with both a fine art practice and, as a partner in Inspace Dynamic, a community and public art consultancy. Elspeth’s produces sculpture and modern metalwork for interiors, exteriors, domestic and public art installations. Her work is design led, and very beautiful, but also practical and functional.
Bespoke inspirational or contemplative pieces can be made to compliment a garden, home or public space. With a strong emphasis on innovative design, Elspeth taps into traditional and modern methods of metalworking:
The traditional methods of blacksmithing, heating up the metal in a forge and forming it while hot are still used, but are complemented by new techniques such as plasma and laser cutting to increase the scope of creative expression.
Her first love is sculpture, and she is increasingly taking on public commissions, with a recent example being the heron piece within Dunblane town centre. This project won the Sustrans Community Links Award for 2016. Elspeth has also installed within schools – one based on their school values – and is always happy to chat through any ideas the community might have.
Elspeth also exhibits smaller pieces in exhibitions such as the RGI annual show, and was given the Joe Hargan Award with Paisley Arts Institute Annual Exhibition.
